About This Workshop:

This 2-day, 16-hour, high-level course is designed to provide individuals a structured introduction to project management using the Project Management Institute’s (PMI) Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) as a basis. The PMBOK is the most widely accepted international paradigm for project management. It identifies, describes and implements processes that are generally recognized as best practices in managing most projects, from basic to complex.

Performance Objectives - Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Explain the function of the Project Management Institute (PMI), the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK), and the requirements for each of PMI’s project management certifications.
  • Describe the means by which organizations select projects that are both affordable and responsive to the strategic objectives of the organization – those that are ultimately “chartered.”
  • Describe the composition and function of the three major project documents – Charter, Scope Statement and Project Management Plan.
  • Explain each of the PMBOK’s 5 Process Groups, 9 Knowledge Areas, and 44 Processes.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of Scope decomposition to the Work Breakdown Schedule (WBS) level, schedule development, network diagramming and the critical path.
  • Develop project cost estimates and budgets.
  • Implement Earned Value Management measures for projects.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of risk planning, risk identification, analysis, development of risk responses, and development and maintenance of a Risk Register.
  • Explain the functions of Quality Planning, Quality Assurance and Quality Control.
  • Explain how projects are divided into phases for better management control.
  • Define the terminology and lexicon specific to project management.

Continuing Education:

PMI has developed several professional credentials that may be of interest to project managers and senior acquisition managers:  the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM), the Project Management Professional (PMP) and the Program Management Professional (PgMP). This workshop offers 16 PDUs towards the maintenance of these credentials. It is also recommended for 16 Continuous Learning Points (CLPs) toward DAWIA/FAC-P/PM requirements. A Government*Horizons Certificate of Completion will be provided to all attendees upon conclusion of the workshop.
