Dr. Edward Eitzen is Senior Partner for Biodefense and Public Health Programs for Martin & Associates, since joining the firm in February 2004. Dr. Eitzen is one of the foremost international experts in biological threat countermeasures and public health strategies in response to infectious disease threats. Dr. Eitzen’s clients include the leading government agencies responsible for defense against biological threats (both natural and man-made) for military and civilian populations, and agencies focused on reducing the threats from existing stockpiles in the former Soviet Union. His clients also include universities, non-profit agencies and private sector firms with technological or subject matter expertise in biological prevention, detection, countermeasures and therapeutics.

For the past 15 years, Dr. Eitzen has been a leader in devising military and civilian biological defense strategies. After serving in Operation Desert Storm in 1991 as the Deputy Commander for Clinical Services and Surgeon of the 62nd Medical Group, 18th Airborne Corps, he was then assigned to the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID), where he held ever-increasing responsibilities in the organization. In July 2000, Dr. Eitzen assumed Command of USAMRIID, where he led the response to the national anthrax attacks in the Fall 2001. In July 2002, he was a by-name request to serve in the Department of Health and Human Services on civilian bioterrorism preparedness and policy issues.

Dr. Eitzen is board-certified in Pediatrics, Emergency Medicine, and Preventive Medicine, and is subspecialty board-certified in Pediatric Emergency Medicine and in Tropical Medicine and Traveler’s Health. Dr. Eitzen has served on several national civilian committees, working groups, and task forces for both the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Emergency Physicians. He has appeared as a speaker and consultant at numerous medical, professional and government conferences, and has published extensively on the medical effects of biological agents and the medical management of biological casualties. He also maintains clinical appointments in Emergency Medicine and Preventive Medicine at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Dr. Eitzen holds a dual academic appointment as Adjunct Associate Clinical Professor of Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences.

He graduated cum laude from Auburn University in 1975 and with honors from the University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham in 1979. He completed residency training in Pediatrics at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in 1982.
